How to Swap ETH to BTC: Convert Ethereum to Bitcoin Step by Step

Updated 7 min read

To swap ETH to BTC, you create an order with a Bitcoin address you control, send ETH on Ethereum mainnet to the one-time deposit address, and receive native BTC in your wallet once the deposit is confirmed and processed. Most exchanges take 5–30 minutes. You do not need an account, a bridge or wrapped Bitcoin.

This guide covers what you need before you start, each step of the swap, how fees and rates work, and the mistakes that cost people the most time and money when they convert Ethereum to Bitcoin.

What happens when you swap ETH to BTC

Ethereum and Bitcoin are separate blockchains. ETH cannot move to the Bitcoin network by itself, so a swap service takes your ETH on Ethereum and sends you BTC on Bitcoin.

On BreezeSwap the process is non-custodial. Each order gets its own deposit address on Ethereum, and the payout goes straight to the Bitcoin address you enter. There is no balance to keep on the platform and no account to create.

The result is native BTC that you control with your own keys. This is different from wrapped Bitcoin tokens on Ethereum, which represent BTC held by a custodian or a bridge and stay on the Ethereum network.

People usually convert ETH to BTC for a few practical reasons:

  • To move funds from Ethereum activity into Bitcoin self-custody, for example on a hardware wallet.
  • To pay someone or a service that accepts only BTC.
  • To rebalance between two networks they already use.

What you need before you start

Before you open the ETH to BTC exchange page, check three things.

1. Native ETH on Ethereum mainnet

The order expects ETH on Ethereum mainnet. ETH on a layer 2 network, or wrapped ETH on another chain, is a different asset for this order and may not be credited automatically. If your ETH is on a layer 2, either bridge it back to mainnet first or choose a matching network in the calculator if one is offered.

2. A little extra ETH for gas

Every Ethereum transaction pays a gas fee, and your own wallet pays it when you send the deposit. Gas is not part of the quote. If you try to send your entire balance, the transaction may fail. Ethereum's overview of gas and fees explains why the cost changes with network demand.

3. A Bitcoin address you control

You need a receiving address from a Bitcoin wallet where you hold the keys. If you do not have one yet, bitcoin.org has a wallet chooser that filters wallets by device and features. Most modern wallets give addresses that start with bc1. Older formats start with 1 or 3, and those work too.

For long-term storage, a hardware wallet is the safer option. Generate the receiving address on the device and confirm it on its screen.

How to swap ETH to BTC step by step

Here is the full flow, from opening the calculator to seeing BTC in your wallet.

  1. Choose the pair. Open the ETH to BTC page or select ETH and BTC in the calculator on the swap page.
  2. Enter the amount. Type how much ETH you want to send. The calculator shows the estimated BTC you receive with fees already included, plus the current minimum and maximum for the pair.
  3. Pick a rate type. Floating rate follows the market until your deposit is processed. Fixed rate locks the BTC amount while the countdown runs, as long as you send the exact ETH amount shown. Our guide on floating vs fixed rate explains when each one fits.
  4. Paste your Bitcoin address. Then compare the first and last few characters with the address in your wallet. Clipboard malware can replace a copied address with a lookalike.
  5. Create the order. You get a one-time ETH deposit address on Ethereum and an order page. Save the order link or the Exchange ID.
  6. Send the ETH. Send from your wallet to the deposit address, on Ethereum mainnet, using a plain transfer. On a fixed-rate order, send exactly the amount shown.
  7. Track the order. The order page moves through statuses such as confirming, exchanging and sending. The order statuses guide explains each one.
  8. Receive BTC. The payout is sent to your address. Bitcoin blocks arrive about every 10 minutes on average, so your wallet may show the incoming BTC as unconfirmed for a while.

If anything looks wrong, contact support with your Exchange ID before you send more funds.

Fees and rates when you convert Ethereum to Bitcoin

It helps to know which costs are in the quote and which are not.

  • Service fee: our service fee is up to 0.4% and already included in the rate. There are no additional fees on top.
  • Payout network fee: the Bitcoin network fee for sending your BTC is included in the estimated amount you receive.
  • Your deposit gas: the gas your wallet pays to send ETH is extra and is not part of the quote.

The calculator always shows the estimated BTC after these fees. Rates move with the market, so the estimate can change until your order is created, and on a floating-rate order until the deposit is processed. The fees guide has the full breakdown.

How long an ETH to BTC swap takes

Most standard exchanges take 5–30 minutes after you send the deposit. The time is split between three stages:

  • Deposit confirmation: Ethereum transactions usually confirm within seconds to a minute, unless the gas you set is too low for current demand.
  • Processing: the exchange is executed once the deposit is confirmed.
  • Payout confirmation: the BTC transaction needs to be mined. With about one block every 10 minutes on average, this is often the longest wait you see in your wallet.

Delays usually come from a low gas setting, a busy Bitcoin network, or an amount outside the limits. See how long an exchange takes for what affects timing.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Most failed or delayed ETH to BTC swaps come from a small set of mistakes.

Sending on the wrong network

ETH on a layer 2, or ETH on BNB Smart Chain, uses the same 0x address format as Ethereum mainnet. Your wallet will happily send it, but the order only watches Ethereum mainnet. If this happens, recovery is a manual process with the liquidity partner. Read what to do after a wrong-network deposit before you contact support.

Sending from a contract or exchange batch

A plain transfer from a standard wallet is the most reliable way to deposit. Sending through a smart contract, or from an exchange that batches withdrawals, can delay detection of the deposit.

Pasting the wrong Bitcoin address

Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed. Always check the address after pasting, and never type it from memory.

Sending a different amount on a fixed-rate order

Fixed rate applies only to the exact amount shown. A larger or smaller deposit may be exchanged at the current rate instead, or refunded.

Forgetting the gas

If you send your full ETH balance, the transaction fails. Leave some ETH in the wallet for gas.

Is a private ETH to BTC swap possible?

A standard swap links your Ethereum deposit and your Bitcoin payout through one exchange. If you want an extra routing step, a private ETH to BTC swap sends the funds through two independent exchanges with an intermediate asset, so neither exchange receives both your deposit address and your payout address.

It is not a mixer, and it does not make transactions anonymous or untraceable. It takes longer and has a higher minimum than a standard swap.

FAQ

Do I need an account to swap ETH to BTC?

No. You only need ETH on Ethereum mainnet, a little extra ETH for gas, and a Bitcoin address you control. KYC is not required for most swaps, but our liquidity partners may request verification, for example if a deposit is flagged by risk screening.

Can I swap ETH to BTC without wrapped Bitcoin or a bridge?

Yes. The swap pays native BTC on the Bitcoin network directly to your wallet. You do not hold any wrapped token, and no bridge is involved on your side.

What is the minimum amount for ETH to BTC?

The minimum depends on current network fees and liquidity, so it changes over time. The calculator shows the current minimum and maximum for the pair before you create an order.

Which Bitcoin address format should I use?

Any standard format your wallet provides works, including addresses that start with bc1, 1 or 3. Use the address exactly as your wallet shows it.

What if my swap is taking longer than 30 minutes?

Check the order page first. A low gas setting, a busy Bitcoin network, or a deposit held for review can slow things down. If the status has not changed for a long time, contact support with your Exchange ID and transaction hash.

Conclusion

Swapping ETH to BTC comes down to three checks: native ETH on Ethereum mainnet, a little extra ETH for gas, and a Bitcoin address you control. Get those right and most swaps finish in 5–30 minutes with the fee already included in the rate. When you are ready, open the ETH to BTC exchange and see the estimated amount before you send anything.
